Master Automotive Service Technology

The goal of this program is to prepare students for careers as Automotive Service Technicians or Mechanics, whose primary responsibilities are to inspect, maintain, and repair cars and light trucks according to manufacturers’ specifications, while demonstrating strong academic and employability skills.

This program focuses on broad, transferable skills and stresses understanding and demonstration elements of the automotive industry skills tested by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). Shop and laboratory activities are an integral part of this program.

PORTFOLIO AND COURSE PROJECTS

Automotive Service Technology is an 1800-hour, 22 month program. The first course, Automotive Service Assistor, is considered the “core”. It begins in the classroom with a focus on equipment and safety regulations, and it introduces the employability and applied academic skills that are incorporated throughout all courses in the program.

After students master the equipment and safety test, they can move to iTECH’s student-run automotive shop, AutoTech@iTECH, to get hands-on experience performing routine maintenance and customer service tasks. Students will earn OCP A (Occupational Completion Point A) upon completion of this course.

The remaining classes are more specialized. They align with the eight service areas required for ASE-Certified Master Automobile Technician status. The sequence of these eight classes, after completion of the core OCP A, is at the discretion of the instructor.

There are a variety of projects within the eight Occupational Completion Points. Students will need to complete all of the projects in order to satisfy the curriculum requirements for this course.

PROGRAM EXPERIENCES

Laboratory activities are an integral part of this program.  These activities include instruction in the use of safety procedures, tools, equipment, materials, and processes related to these occupations.

ENTRY & EXIT REQUIREMENTS

• Specific Admissions Requirements: Bennett Aptitude Test – score of mid 20s or above

• DOE Basic Skills Exit Requirements: Communications 9, Computation 10 (unless exempt)

• CASAS Exit Requirements: Communications 239+, Computation 230+ (unless exempt)

PREP FOR EMPLOYMENT

This program offers a sequence of courses that provides coherent and rigorous content aligned with challenging academic standards and relevant technical knowledge and skills needed to prepare for further education and careers in transportation.

• Internships
  Various professional automotive repair shops are partners with iTECH’s Automotive Service program and provide excellent internship opportunities for our students.
   
• Workforce Education Internship Program
  Students participate in work-based learning experiences in their field of study outside of the classroom. ITECH has a Workforce Internship Program for those students who need work experience, but do not have an out-of-school job.
   
• Job Placement
  Our competent counseling staff provides job postings on a daily basis, with help in resume writing and the interviewing process.

CERTIFICATE

A certificate is awarded to students who successfully complete the program’s competencies and satisfy basic skill requirements in accordance with state guidelines. Students will also have the opportunity to test and earn additional industry and national credentials through the training program.
